Foucault pendulum. A pendulum or swinging weight, supported by a long wire, by which J. B. L. Foucault demonstrated in 1851 the rotation of Earth on its axis. Foucault used a 62-lb (28-kg) iron ball suspended on about a 200-ft (60-m) wire in the Pantheon in Paris. The upper support of the wire restrains the wire only in the vertical direction.

Se hela listan på en.wikipedia.org The Foucault pendulum is named after its creator, French physicist Léon Foucault. It is a special pendulum that is free to swing in any direction from its pivot point. Traditional pendulums, such as those found in clocks, are restricted to only swinging back and forth in one direction. Foucault Pendulum - YouTube.

Foucault’s original pendulums at Paris rotated clockwise at a rate of more than 11° per hour, or with a period of about 32 hours per complete rotation. Foucaultpendel eller Foucaults pendel är en stor pendel som används för att demonstrera att jorden roterar runt sin egen axel. Denna pendeltyp är uppkallad efter den franske fysikern Léon Foucault som först konstruerade en sådan.

Introduced in the 1851, Léon Foucault claimed that the swinging rotational motions were proof of the earth's rotation. The pendulum swings back and forth, and over time, slowly seems to rotate over its arena or "pit". It is explained that the earth is rotating beneath the Foucault Pendulum kits as seen in museums and Univ.

A Foucault pendulum demonstrates the rotation of the earth – but the details are subtle. The precession of a Foucault pendulum is easy enough to understand if the pendulum is suspended at one of the Earth's poles, because in this case the point of suspension is not accelerating (to a good approximation).
